Assistant Editor, Children's Publishing

– Full time, permanent

– Salary: £23,000-26,000, depending on experience

Thames & Hudson is the leading global publisher of illustrated books on the visual arts, history and popular culture thamesandhudson.com. We are seeking a well-organized, meticulous and creative Assistant Editor to work on our award-winning list of children’s art books, illustrated non-fiction, picture books, activity books and pop-ups. This is an exciting new position, designed to support our small but busy department as we increase the number of titles on T&H’s successful children’s list.

Based in London, the Assistant Editor will provide essential editorial and administrative support in the delivery of fully illustrated books for co-edition publishing and play an important role in liaising with colleagues in T&H’s New York, Melbourne and Hong Kong offices on books that cater to an international market. The role also represents the opportunity to independently manage a small number of titles, working directly with our highly esteemed authors, illustrators, and museum and gallery partners.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Commissioning & Managing Editor you will provide editorial and administration support to the C&ME and the Children’s Editor, including:

– proofreading all copyedited texts and preparing text files for print

– preparing files for first-time paperback and board book releases

– coordinating weekly work-in-progress meetings

– overseeing the Americanization process

– independently managing 2-3 titles per year, working directly with authors, illustrators, institutional contacts and freelancers

– acting as a main point of contact between the Children’s team in the London office and colleagues in our New York and Melbourne offices

– liaising with International Rights, Sales and Marketing

– providing dedicated administrative support, including organizing book fair appointments.

There will also be the opportunity to assist in the commissioning, development and acquisition of new titles.

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

– Working knowledge of the children’s publishing industry and its processes

– Impeccable proofreading skills and an excellent command of English spelling and grammar

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills

– Confidence liaising directly and collaborating with third parties including authors, illustrators and freelancers

– Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

– Effective time management and prioritization skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving

– Sensitive and proactive approach towards diversity and inclusivity

– Proficient working in Microsoft packages, Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Pro

– Aptitude for copywriting and copyediting

– A genuine enthusiasm for children’s books and the arts

– A degree in art history would be a bonus, but not essential
