Assistant Editor, Academic Editorial, Law

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking Assistant Editor to build on their publishing experience and join a world-leading law list that publishes for both the academic and practitioner market.

Reporting to the Senior Commissioning Editors on the Hart law list, the role sits in the Bloomsbury Academic and Professional division and is based in Oxford.

Hart books are intellectually stimulating and innovative, and they contribute to the academic study of law as well as to its development and practical implementation. With over 2,000 titles in print, the Hart list includes textbooks, scholarly monographs and works for practitioners and spans the entirety of legal scholarship.

The role

Tasks will be varied but will include:

  • Providing support as required to the Senior Commissioning Editors on the law list
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with authors, volume editors and series editors to ensure a high standard of author care throughout the publishing process.
  • Keeping the publishing programme on schedule through regular liaison with authors, and by maintaining and updating the frontlist plan for any given year
  • Preparing manuscripts for handover to production to agreed standards and on schedule
  • Developing and commissioning new editions or new titles to an agreed target
  • Commissioning and managing peer reviews for projects as required
  • Setting up new titles on our bibliographic database, and ensuring that any changes to projects are updated promptly and in line with key dates
  • Writing and editing marketing copy
  • Briefing cover designs
  • Preparing and managing contributor contracts for new projects
  • Supporting editors in managing backlist
  • Responding promptly and appropriately to external and internal inquiries
  • Providing basic reports and sales information

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • A highly organised individual with experience of working in a Publishing Editorial department
  • Exceptional attention to detail and command of English spelling and grammar
  • Good time management with ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Solution-focused, calm and able to logically solve problems under pressure
  • Proactive and able to take initiative
  • Flexible and able to work independently
  • A team player
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills and confidence when dealing with senior external stakeholders
  • Places a high value on quality of content, author care, company reputation and sustained customer relationship
  • Strong IT skills including competency in using Microsoft Office
  • An interest in academic publishing, and in developing industry and market awareness
  • Familiarity with the legal landscape an advantage

Additional information
The role is a full-time permanent position.

The role is based at our Oxford office, Kemp House, Chawley Park, Cumnor Hill, Oxford OX2 9PH on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Mondays and Thursdays.
