Commercial Analyst, Commercial

Bloomsbury is seeking an enthusiastic, and highly organized Commercial Analyst. The role will primarily be focussed on supporting the Senior Commercial Manager who works across the Consumer business, which includes our Adult, Children’s Trade and Education divisions.

A focus of this role will be to ensure our publishing teams are provided with insightful commercial information in order to support effective decision making and it will involve significant work around leading past performance reviews, reviewing acquisition P&L’s and developing new and existing reporting to improve decision making across our business.

This is an exciting role which covers a broad range of financial and commercial related tasks, with exposure to both finance and non-finance stakeholders who share a common passion in publishing. The role would suit someone who shares our passion for books, whilst also being a proactive, committed individual comfortable working with both data and people in equal measure. 

The role

  • Supporting the publishing teams in the completion of accurate and realistic acquisition P&Ls
  • Regular editorial schedule reviews to track future pipeline of titles, identifying gaps and highlighting risks
  • Regular analysis and reporting which will include:
  • List shape reporting to support editorial schedule reviews
  • Annual past performance reviews including performance vs acquisition assumptions
  • Detailed review of sales performance
  • Pricing reviews
  • Monitoring and control of costs throughout the book life cycle
  • Tracking of author advances
  • Analysis of current internal and external trends
  • Working closely with the Editorial teams to establish and monitor key dates within critical path, including contract signature, review of unpublished advances and finish and specification changes.
  • Deputise for the Senior Commercial Manager in certain meetings.
  • Ad hoc analysis and projects across the Group.
  • Support on finance and commercial education/training for non-finance staff

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Pro-active, self-starter with mature and organised approach, able to work independently
  • Experience in book publishing is preferred but not essential
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to bring numbers alive to non-finance staff
  • Numerate and strong on detail
  • Confident to challenge the status quo
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Intermediate to advanced excel sills (IF statements, vlookups, pivot tables, sumifs)

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position

Salary Pay Point: £42,000

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Monday and Tuesday.
