Commercial Analyst (Maternity Cover)

The role of Commercial Analyst will be primarily focussed on supporting the Trade Commercial Manager who works across the Consumer business, which includes our Adult, Children’s Trade and Education divisions. It is a fixed term contract role created to bolster the recently created Commercial Team whilst the Commercial Director is on maternity leave. Over the next 12 months this small but mighty team is looking to build upon the progress made so far in providing our publishing teams with the insightful commercial information required to help grow our business to the next level.

The team is laser focussed on Strategy implementation, which will include significant work around leading past performance reviews, reviewing acquisition P&L’s and developing new reporting to improve decision making across our Trade Business. There will also be ad hoc analysis required for our Non Consumer colleagues.

This is an exciting role which covers a broad range of financial and commercial related tasks, with exposure to both finance and non-finance stakeholders who share a common passion in publishing. The role would suit someone who shares our passion for books, whilst also being a proactive, committed individual comfortable working with both data and people in equal measure.

The role

  • Work closely with the Trade Commercial Manager in operating an effective critical path process including: 
  • Implementation of robust internal control framework to monitor and control costs throughout the book life cycle;
  • Supporting Trade Publishers in the completion of realistic and acquisition P&Ls;
  • Implementation of regular editorial schedule reviews to track future pipeline of titles, identifying gaps and highlighting risks; 
  • Regular review of past performance; 
  • Play a key role in standardisation of processes across the Group; 
  • Analysis of current external trends.
  • Working closely with the Editorial teams to establish and monitor key dates within critical path, including contract signature, review of unpublished advances and finish and specification changes.
  • Developing new reporting structures to support the Consumer Strategy, including brand reporting, title count tracking and list shape reviews.
  • Ad hoc analysis and projects across the Group.

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Pro-active, self-starter with mature and organised approach, able to work independently
  • Experience in book publishing is preferred
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to bring numbers alive to non-finance staff
  • Numerate and strong on detail
  • Confident to challenge the status quo
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Additional information

The role is a full-time, temporary position for 12 months.

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Monday and Tuesday.
