Editor, Bloomsbury Wildlife

Bloomsbury Wildlife is the world’s leading publisher of natural history books. Its list includes general trade titles featuring authors such as Chris Packham, Kate Bradbury, Sophie Pavelle and Jini Reddy, as well as specialist natural history works in the Helm, Bloomsbury Naturalist, British Wildlife Collections and Poyser imprints, and much else besides.

This is a rare opportunity for a creative and highly organised individual to join the editorial team at Editor level. The role will see them utilise editorial and project-management skills in an exciting role, which will involve managing a number of full-colour books through the editorial process, from contract to manuscript delivery through to publication. It requires liaison with authors, freelance editors, photographers, illustrators, designers and in-house colleagues.

Working closely with the commissioning team, this is a brilliant opportunity for an ambitious and talented editor keen to take the next step in their publishing career.

The role

  • Project-managing full-colour and mono titles from across the list (both specialist and trade) through the editorial process from acquisition through to publication
  • Establishing good relationships with authors and agents
  • Briefing and managing freelance copy-editors, proof-readers and designers, including briefing page-layout designs for full-colour titles as required
  • Liaising with authors, designers, illustrators and editors, collating comments and ensuring final files are ready for press on budget and on schedule
  • Writing Advance Information sheets, briefing jackets and writing copy, and managing metadata to a high standard
  • Working with the Rights Department to gather materials for foreign editions and to prepare rights catalogues
  • Offering support to the Bloomsbury Wildlife editorial team and assisting with team-wide projects, such as development of new procedures
  • Attending industry events

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Editorial experience in illustrated book publishing
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organisational skills
  • Excellent proof-reading and copy-editing skills
  • The ability to write strong sales copy and blurbs
  • The ability to prioritise and use initiative, juggling several projects at one time
  • Solid time-management skills to cope with competing deadlines
  • Basic knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator helpful but not essential
  • Interest in the wildlife and the natural world

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position.

The role will be based at our London office at 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP. There is a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Mondays and Tuesdays.
