Editorial Assistant, Academic Editorial

Bloomsbury is the new home of Red Globe Press, a leading academic imprint for textbooks and educational resources in the Humanities, Business, Social Sciences and Study Skills. We are looking for an Editorial Assistant to join our friendly and vibrant higher education publishing team, working on our highly regarded social work list and our market-leading study skills list (which includes bestselling titles The Study Skills Handbook and Cite Them Right) to deliver an exciting programme of books. There will also be opportunities to get involved in our digital products: skills for study, cite them right, and the social work toolkit. We are entering an exciting period of development and will need assistance on tasks such as market research as well as creating and uploading new content.

The Editorial Assistant provides valuable administrative and editorial support to the Publisher and the Senior Digital Development Editor, and reports to the Publisher.

This is an ideal position for someone wanting to establish a career in academic publishing.

The role

  • Fostering strong working relationships with authors
  • managing editorial processes and the peer review process for new proposals
  • preparing final typescripts for handover to production
  • writing and editing cover copy and blurbs
  • briefing cover artwork
  • liaising with authors and colleagues in sales, marketing, production and editorial
  • supporting work on the lists’ digital platforms, supported by the senior digital development editor

Knowledge, skills and experience 

The ideal applicant for this role will: 

  • have excellent communication and team-working skills in order to deal with people at all levels within the company and with external contacts;
  • be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks;
  • be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries;
  • be self-motivated with a calm, professional approach and can-do attitude, and able to work on their own initiative;
  • be numerate and computer-literate, with a sharp eye for detail.

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position with a salary of £23,000

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP however, as all Bloomsbury employees are currently working from home, this role will also be based from home until our offices reopen on a mandatory working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).

As an Assistant role, this position is eligible for Bloomsbury’s Rental Deposit Loan Scheme. To assist candidates who want to start and to establish a career in publishing, Bloomsbury offers an interest-free rental deposit to support securing somewhere to live. The rental deposit loan can be up to £3,000 and will be paid back over 2 years.
