Editorial Assistant, Biblical Studies, Religion List

This is an exciting opportunity to become a crucial part of Bloomsbury’s award-winning academic division, and to work for the prestigious T&T Clark imprint, which was founded over 200 years ago. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking Editorial Assistant to provide administrative and organisational support for our Biblical Studies/Religion list. This is an exciting opportunity to learn first-hand about a broad range of activities across the publishing business and develop the key skills required for a career in publishing. The successful candidate will join a friendly team based in our central London offices. 

The role

To assist the commissioning editor and senior publisher for Biblical Studies in the effective management of print and electronic products throughout the publication process.

Working with authors

  • Sustaining close working relationships with authors, to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and digital content
  • As well as acting as the main point of contact for author’s queries, resolving issues when needed

Production and Marketing

  • Attend and contribute to list meetings with production, marketing and digital
  • Preparing and briefing manuscripts for production, clearing third-party permissions
  • Briefing covers, writing and editing marketing materials and back cover copy

Administration and Market Research

  • Creating and maintaining accurate title and product records on internal Bloomsbury databases
  • Supporting the editor and publisher in managing backlist titles
  • Assisting with the development of new book projects by conducting market research
  • Sending book proposals and draft manuscripts for reviews
  • Organizing peer review fees and other payments 

Collaboration and Representation

  • Working efficiently with all members of the Religion editorial team
  • Liaising with other members of the Humanities and Social Sciences editorial team as well as colleagues from other departments – production, design, marketing, sales and Bloomsbury Digital Resources
  • Working closely with the Global Head of Academic Publishing)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Management of own workload and ability to work to deadlines
  • Basic project management
  • Interest in developing industry and market awareness
  • Driven, flexible and passionate about academic publishing
  • Commercial awareness and customer focus
  • Able to multitask and prioritise effectively
  • Able to be a self-starter and to work on own initiative
  • Able to handle and communicate information sensitively and professionally, calm and logical response under pressure
  • Good communication (oral and written) skills
  • Attention to detail, accurate proof reading
  • Places a high value on quality of content, author care, company reputation and sustained customer relationship

Additional information

The role is a permanent full-time position, with a salary of £25,000 per annum

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP. Bloomsbury have a mandatory working pattern of 2 days office based/ 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).

Allocated office days for this role are Wednesday & Thursday

As an Assistant role, this position is eligible for Bloomsbury’s Rental Deposit Loan Scheme. To assist candidates who want to start and to establish a career in publishing, Bloomsbury offers an interest-free rental deposit to support securing somewhere to live. The rental deposit loan can be up to £3,000 to be paid back over 2 years.
