Editorial Assistant – Philosophy and Linguistics – Academic Division

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to become a crucial part of Bloomsbury’s award-winning academic division. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking Editorial Assistant to provide administrative and organisational support for our Philosophy and Linguistics lists. We publish across a range of product types, from research monographs to textbooks and major reference products in print and electronic formats, creating innovate digital resources for instructors, students and researchers.  This is an opportunity to learn first-hand about a broad range of activities across the publishing business and develop the key skills required for a career in academic publishing. 

The Role

To assist the Philosophy and Linguistic teams in the effective management of print and digital products throughout the publication process.

Working with Authors

  • Attend and contribute to list meetings with production, marketing and digital
  • Maintaining close contact with authors to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and digital content
  • Acting as the main point of contact for author queries, resolving issues as needed
  • Preparing and organising author contracts

Production, Permissions and Reviews

  • Preparing and briefing manuscripts for production
  • Clearing third-party permissions
  • Sending book proposals and draft manuscripts for review

Writing Copy and Briefing Covers

  • Writing and editing marketing and back cover copy
  • Briefing cover designs

Administration and Market Research

  • Creating and maintaining accurate title and product records on internal Bloomsbury databases, including Biblio3 and Bloomsbury Content Manager
  • Supporting editors in managing backlist titles
  • Assisting with the development of new book projects by conducting market research
  • Organising peer reviewer fees and other payments

Collaboration and Representation

  • Working closely with all members of the Philosophy and Linguistics Teams
  • Liaising with other members of the Humanities and Social Sciences team as well as colleagues from other departments such as production, design, marketing and sales, and Bloomsbury Digital Resources

Skills, Knowledge, Experience

  • Committed to a career in academic publishing
  • Proactive, confident self-starter
  • Collaborative team player
  • Highly organised with the ability to multi- task, combined with ability to prioritize appropriately
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Positive outlook, strong problem-solving and time management skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail

This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary of £23,000 per annum.  The role is based at our beautiful offices in Bedford Square, London with flexibility to work partly at the office and partly at home however, as all Bloomsbury employees are currently working from home, this role will be based from home until our offices reopen.
