Metadata and Discovery Assistant

Bloomsbury’s friendly, award-winning metadata unit is looking for an enthusiastic and organised Metadata and Discovery Assistant.

In this newly created role, you’ll be supporting the Academic & Professional (A&P) Metadata & Discovery team in creating, maintaining and distributing quality, timely and effective metadata for print, ebook and digital resources content. Reporting to the Head of Metadata and Discovery (A&P), you’ll be working with colleagues across Bloomsbury to champion the importance of metadata and feed into the company-wide strategy for the unit.

The role

  • Preparing the monthly marketing copy approval QA reports
  • Preparing additional reports to monitor and measure timely title approval and missing key data
  • Key role in backlist metadata exception reporting to improve the quality and consistency of title and contributor data
  • Managing the weekly key changes report
  • Managing metadata checks of the Amazon weekly load report
  • Creating and maintaining up to date tracking documents for Bloomsbury Digital Resources (BDR) discovery record production and delivery
  • Managing the ‘Handover to Discovery’ workflow between the BDR Product Management team and the Metadata & Discovery team utilising case management software
  • Oversee the internal distribution of MARC, KBART and any other metadata output files as appropriate
  • Primary responsibility for troubleshooting, resolving, or escalating metadata and discovery queries and issues in a timely and professional manner
  • Assist in editing and maintaining internal Wiki pages ensuring accurate and timely information about BDR product Handover to Discovery processes
  • Develop understanding of industry-wide data practices and initiatives

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • An understanding and belief in the central importance of metadata in publishing
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity to seek out and implement improvements to procedures, systems and documentation
  • Data minded with excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain a consistent and high standard of work
  • Working knowledge of bibliographic and/or content management systems
  • Proofreading and copywriting experience would be beneficial
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and services
  • Excellent time-management skills coupled with the ability to effectively plan, prioritise and organise allocated work activities to achieve assigned objectives within given timeframes
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer care skills including an ability to communicate well
  • Flexible approach and ability to work effectively in a busy, dynamic environment
  • A qualification in publishing or library studies is desirable but not essential

Additional information

This is permanent, full time position.

Salary Pay Point: £27,000 per annum

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Wednesday and Thursday.

As an Assistant role, this position is eligible for Bloomsbury’s Rental Deposit Loan Scheme. To assist candidates who want to start and to establish a career in publishing, Bloomsbury offers an interest-free rental deposit to support securing somewhere to live. The rental deposit loan can be up to £3,000 and will be paid back over 2 years.
