Editorial Assistant - Books

The Bookseller is the leading trade magazine for the publishing industry in the UK. Founded in 1858, we are fiercely independent. As well as the weekly print magazine, The Bookseller is available online via subscription, and runs The British Book Awards, The YA Book Prize, the Marketing & Publicity, Children’s and Futurebook conferences. It is now owned by The Stage Media Company.

The Bookseller is placing great emphasis on creating additional detailed book content to supplement our author interviews, books previews, charts and data analysis. In addition, a newly launched website, theBookseller.com, will offer opportunity to amplify The Bookseller’s books content, and this role will be integral to the success of that.

We are looking for an Editorial Assistant - Books who will bring together all the elements of The Bookseller’s print and online books coverage. Reporting to the Books Editor, this role would be ideal for someone recently graduated from a first degree course or from one of the post-graduate publishing courses. You will need proficiency in all standard MS Office software (Word, Excel etc) as well as an exceptional eye for detail.

You will be very organised with a proven ability to meet deadlines and respond quickly to changing priorities.

You will be working on a variety of content management systems (CMS) and should be comfortable with a level of technical complexity.

Above all, this role needs boundless enthusiasm for books and reading and for getting our content into the hands of a trade audience. You will often be the first contact for publishers’ publicity teams, festival organisers and bookshops and your excitement about books needs to match theirs.

Main purpose of the role:

  • To bring together all the elements of The Bookseller’s print and online books coverage.
  • To be the first contact for publishers’ publicity teams, festival organisers and bookshops.

Key responsibilities and tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Collating submissions from publishers and distributing material, where needed, to book previewers and category preview experts
  • Supporting the Books Editor with organising publisher presentations and ensuring The Bookseller is on relevant publicity lists for new book announcements
  • Ensuring the books preview content (and any other books related content) is uploaded onto theBookseller.com in a timely manner, and if necessary, working with The Bookseller’s production team to facilitate this
  • Working with the web and social executive to ensure books content is surfaced on thebookseller.com, and more generally covering for the web and social executive where appropriate (for example, conference reporting)
