Freelance Writer

The Bookseller is recruiting for an experienced freelance writer to cover a period of maternity leave on The Bookseller’s monthly New Titles: Fiction preview. The preview covers first format adult fiction released in a particular month. It is written with high street booksellers in mind to aid with their buying decisions, and is also read widely by other journalists, publishers, agents and authors.

Key duties include:

  • Requesting advance information and reading material from publishers
  • Reading and selecting key titles for inclusion, and picking particular highlights e.g. Book of the Month, Editor’s Choice
  • Filing the preview each month to the sub-editors on a strict deadline

We are looking for an experienced freelance with a proven track record of writing about books so please provide links to published work. An extensive knowledge of the book market is crucial and a background in bookselling and/or publishing is preferred.

The Bookseller’s previews, across fiction, non-fiction, children’s and discover, are key market information and essential reading for booksellers, journalists, and publicists. As such, this is an important and high-profile position both within The Bookseller and across the book industry at large.

The Bookseller is the leading trade magazine for the publishing industry in the UK. Founded in 1858, we are proudly independent. As well as the weekly print magazine, The Bookseller is available online via subscription, and runs The British Book Awards, The YA Book Prize, the Marketing & Publicity, Children’s and FutureBook conferences. It is now owned by The Stage Media Company Ltd.

The fee for this is £550 per calendar month, with additional scope for related paid freelance, including author profiles.

The deadline to apply for the role is 15th December. The role reports into The Bookseller's Books Editor, Alice O'Keeffe.
