Rights Executive

Canongate Books is one of the UK’s leading independent publishers – in 2021, we were named Independent Publisher of the Year and one of our Rights team won Rights Professional of the Year – and we’re looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking Rights Executive to join the Rights & Contracts team in our Edinburgh office.

Our ideal candidate will be a creative and passionate self-starter with a love of books and at least one year’s experience in a Rights department pitching and selling books; with excellent communication and organisational skills; close attention to detail; a head for numbers; experience with contracts and a knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Biblio and InDesign.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Handling sub-agented territories in Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey, Russia and Israel as well as direct sales in Arabic-speaking countries and India, meeting sub-agents and publishers at international book fairs
  • Handling permissions via the platform PLS
  • Handling artwork requests and cover approvals
  • Book Fair preparations which include designing and updating our Rights Guide, scheduling meetings and coordinating a new titles showcase for our subagents
  • Press updates to foreign publishers who have bought our books
  • Maintaining our database on Biblio for contacts, deals, submissions and payments
  • Taking care of publicity requests on behalf of foreign publishers and maintaining key authors’ publicity schedules internationally
  • Assisting the Rights & Contracts team as a whole and being the main point of contact for queries to the team

This is a full-time role reporting to the Senior Rights Manager, and will be based in Edinburgh, though the company is still operating with flexible working guidelines at the current time.

Salary: minimum £24,000pa, depending on experience
