Production editor

An exciting opportunity to join Cicerone’s small team making great guides in a busy production environment with exposure to printed and digital content and workflows, and to make an all-round contribution to the team and the business.

Cicerone

Cicerone Press is a leading publisher of trusted guides for walkers, trekkers, mountaineers and cyclists. Our 375 guides span the UK, Europe and much of the world, and are sold in many countries, in specialist and general outlets, as well as online.

Our friendly team of 15 is based in Kendal on the edge of the Lake District, working closely with our authors, copyeditors, printers, distributors, retailers and media and many others in the outdoor community.

We believe in providing the best possible guides and service to our customers and consumers and looking after our authors and suppliers. We are a supportive and friendly team, where your ideas can flourish.

The role

The role is accountable to the Senior Editor, and you will engage with all areas of this small team including those in design, operations, marketing, sales and IT.

We would expect you to work closely with authors, cartographers, freelance copyeditors, marketing colleagues and designers to bring together great guides at the highest standards and drive forward each project.

You will be a key part of the editorial team, preparing print and digital content for publication. This will involve managing new guides, new edition projects and updates from their pre-publication through its complete life cycle including receipt of manuscript and materials receipt, mapping, edit, design and production.

A crucial part of the role involves working with authors to hone initial plans into well-rounded projects and supporting them through the complete process from idea to guide.

We don’t just look for high quality in what we do, but also in how we do it. You will have the opportunity to support and help to improve and develop the editorial process, systems and standards and the integration between editorial, design and marketing/sales.

You would be expected to have a high level of expertise in editing and experience in writing marketing and other material for online and off-line purposes, integrating with marketing and bibliographic needs.

The person

The editor will be a bright, enthusiastic and organised person, able to work independently on a range of projects at the same time. In addition to previous experience in publishing, you will need:

  • excellent writing skills and experience writing and editing text
  • excellent communication skills
  • a complete knowledge of the production process
  • a thorough understanding of MS Office, particularly Word
  • the ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • excellent teamworking with people both within and outside the office team

We are a specialist publisher, so a passion for our field of outdoor activities will be invaluable. It will enable you to make sound editorial judgements and build relationships with the many different authors you will be working with.

The ability to work with text, photographs, maps and other illustrations and integrate them into coherent guides is a key skill. Familiarity with InDesign and Creative Suite applications would be an advantage.

The production process at Cicerone is strongly digital with an XML-first approach and tightly integrated with design, eBook and online and mobile content creation. Previous experience of working with XML would be beneficial although training will be given, as it is a key component of our workflow.

Finally

This is a fantastic opportunity for an Editor or Production Editor (or similar) looking to develop an Editorial career with an established publishing company, working amongst a collaborative and supportive team. This is a full-time role, with our offices based in Kendal. Currently and expected in the future hybrid working.
