Digital Portfolio Director (Humanities and Social Sciences)

We are excited to be recruiting for a Digital Portfolio Director on behalf of an award-winning publisher of academic collections for the higher education market; this role will lead the vision, direction and strategy for the humanities and social sciences portfolio, spanning History, Philosophy, Religion, and more. This is an incredible opportunity for someone with a passion for and experience creating and managing digital academic products, managing the content acquisition process and the relationships with external partners.

Candidate profile:

The ideal candidate for this role will demonstrate strategic thinking, commercial acumen, and deep understanding of academic publishing and digital products. They should have a proven ability to conceive and execute large-scale projects aimed at the end-users, and a keen understanding of market dynamics and emerging trends, particularly in digital products and library sales.

A track record of successful content acquisition through partnerships, licensing, and commissioning is essential, as is the ability to nurture and maintain relationships with third party content providers.

Overall, the ideal candidate will blend strategic vision, commercial acumen, and deep industry knowledge to drive the portfolio's growth and success in the academic publishing landscape.

More about the role:

The Digital Portfolio Director for Humanities and Social Sciences is a key decision-maker and will oversee the entire strategic direction and financial performance of digital products. You will act as the ultimate business owner for the HSS portfolio, ensuring that products and new updates are delivered on time and within budget, and that the vision for the portfolio is clearly expressed to all relevant stakeholders.

This role involves leading and managing the teams responsible for the portfolio's products, reviewing performance to meet revenue and profitability targets, and justifying third-party partnerships to enhance digital resources. You will be responsible for contracting and developing products to meet acquisition revenue targets, conducting market research, and presenting business cases for new product concepts. You will have line management responsibilities for at least one other member of the team.

Additionally, the Director collaborates with internal teams to brainstorm product ideas and may serve as the digital editorial lead for internally generated content. They engage in all phases of the product life cycle, including contract negotiation with external partners, and participate in conferences and library events to represent the company.
