Edinburgh International Book Festival - Director

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is one of the largest, most multifaceted events of its kind, featuring leading writers and thinkers from across the globe and attracting audiences of all ages.

In 2024 the Festival relocates to an exciting new home at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, within the University of Edinburgh, presenting opportunities to grow the programme’s ambition and scope through new collaborations.

The Trustees of the Edinburgh International Book Festival are looking to appoint its next Director to define the future for the Festival as it starts this new chapter.

Reporting to the Chair and Board, the Director will have overall responsibility for setting vision and strategy and ensuring effective financial and operational management and control.  Working closely with the Festival’s senior leadership team, the Director will ensure the impact and coherence of the artistic programme, taking account of stakeholder interests, balancing charitable and commercial aims, progressing key agendas for the Festival including Scottish writing and culture, spearheading the fundraising effort, and embedding equality, diversity and inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

The Director is likely to be an established leader from the literature or wider cultural sector, with experience in managing substantial budgets and teams and a significant track-record in curating a broad-ranging programme of events which reaches the largest possible audiences, both through live encounters and digitally.

This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious and visionary individual, with proven leadership experience, who brings ideas to build on the Festival’s success, define the future, and explore new horizons.
