A renowned Oxford-based academic publisher specialising in archaeological and historical content is now hiring for an Editorial Assistant to join their small team.

The Editorial Assistant position is will suit an individual who is enthusiastic, organised, and detail-oriented, and it presents a wonderful opportunity for someone passionate about academic publishing and archaeology to gain hands-on experience and grow within the industry.

Details of the role:

  • Salary of £24,000 - £28,000
  • Hybrid working with a min. of 2 days in the office per week

Overview of the responsibilities:

Responsibilities include coordinating the peer review process for manuscripts, organising journal reviews for published books, and managing administrative tasks such as maintaining records and handling copyright permissions.

The Editorial Assistant's responsibilities encompass various crucial tasks, including coordinating reviews, identifying potential reviewers, preparing manuscripts, and maintaining records of review requests and outcomes. Administrative duties include managing manuscript submissions and publication schedules, handling copyright permissions, updating author guidelines, proofreading documents, and overseeing office supplies.

Additionally, the role involves providing support to the Editor and Editorial Director, assisting with conference materials, special projects, scheduling, and occasional cross-functional tasks, with opportunities to attend academic conferences.

About you:

Effective communication is key in this role, as the Editorial Assistant serves as a primary point of contact for authors and reviewers, ensuring professional and timely correspondence throughout the editorial process. Collaboration with colleagues across departments is also essential, contributing to team meetings and participating in initiatives to enhance the company's publishing program.

The ideal candidate should possess a keen interest in academic publishing and history or archaeology, along with really strong written and verbal communication skills. We're also looking for good organisational abilities and a knack for multitasking.

While an undergraduate degree is essential, backgrounds in Archaeology, History, Classics, or English are desirable, with additional language skills being advantageous. Prior experience in publishing or editorial assistance is preferred but not mandatory.
