The publishing division of a highly successful membership organisation based in Hertfordshire is looking to recruit a motivated Executive Editor to join their journals team for a fixed contract or around 14 months. This role is a fabulous opportunity for an experienced editor with line management experience, looking for a rewarding and interesting new challenge.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Manage the Journal Editorial team effectively, ensuring that titles are reviewed, produced and published to agreed quality, budget and schedule.
- Working with the Managing Editors, responsible for the development of a number of titles in the journal portfolio.
- Raise the product profiles through improvement of impact factors and other measures of visibility.
- Work very closely with the marketing department to raise the visibility of the journal.
- Responsible for the succession and recruitment of the Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board Members.
- Liaise with external editors, authors and referees to identify new commissioning opportunities.
- Look for new opportunities to launch new products and to develop journal launches.
- Refocus and redirect the brand as appropriate to meet evolving customer and commercial needs.
- Contribute to the strategy for the overall Academic Publishing programme
The successful person will have:
- Educated to degree level (ideally in a scientific or engineering discipline)
- Proven experience managing a list of STM journals
- Excellent people management skills and proven experience of line management and able to coach, mentor and inspire staff
- Strong commissioning ability/potential with a commitment to developing this side of the business
- The ability to manage multiple projects
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a high degree of literacy and numeracy, plus experience of using different IT packages within a working environment.
- Target-driven and strong communications skills
- Willingness to travel
- The ability to interact intelligently and persuasively with authors, referees and external editors
