Fiction Editor – 12 month fixed-term contract (maternity cover)

Faber and Faber is a leading independent literary publisher based in central London. We have a rich literary history dating back to the 1920s. Our list of authors includes Sebastian Barry, Rachel Cusk, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Akwaeke Emezi, Marina Hyde, Kazuo Ishiguro, Max Porter, Sally Rooney, Leïla Slimani, Gary Younge and a backlist including the works of T. S. Eliot, William Golding, Seamus Heaney, P. D. James and Sylvia Plath among many others. Faber is also a supplier of sales and distribution services to independent publishers and has a market-leading creative writing school.

With a list that includes the legendary Thomas Kenneally, the critically and commercially adored Eliza Clark, the upcoming debut of the season from Jonny Sweet and Waterstones thriller of the month author Charlotte Vassell, Libby Marshall’s area of the Faber fiction list is poised for exponential growth. We are now looking for an editor to drive this in Libby’s absence, editing and overseeing the work of a raft of brilliant writers.

The editor will curate brilliant new writers, edit their work and drive all aspects of the strategy with a unique character. You will be tasked with engaging new readerships and communities. You will also be expected to publish with dynamism and creativity, sensitivity and bravery -- and with serious commercial impact.

Key qualities will be a committed and ambitious editor with flair and with experience of the publishing industry.

This role will report to Associate Publisher, Louisa Joyner. This is a full-time role for a fixed term of 12 months, on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of two days in our London office.

To apply, please submit a full CV and covering letter to the Recruiting Manager at fictioneditor@faber.co.uk quoting reference BS.

Closing date: Thursday 22nd February.

Faber has a staff of just over 140, based across our offices in Hatton Garden (London) and Harlow. We want all our staff to have the best possible, most positive and enjoyable experience while working at Faber.

Our benefits include:

- Access to Faber titles (including regular staff book clubs), discounted Independent Alliance titles

- Minimum of 28 days’ holiday per year

- Five days per year for volunteering work of your choice

- Full subscription to the Headspace meditation app

- Season-ticket loans

- Cycle-to-work vouchers

- Subsidised eye tests

- Generous pension scheme

- Life assurance and income protection insurance

- Access to online GP and advisory services

We welcome applications from any individual regardless of ethnic origin, gender, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation or age. All applications will be considered on merit.
