The Role
We are seeking an experienced publishing professional with strong indexing knowledge and business acumen for an Indexing Manager position. Reporting to the Associate Director, Impact, the Indexing Manager is responsible for enhancing the visibility, discoverability and reputation of Frontiers journals and articles by overseeing the indexing strategy and operations of our growing editorial portfolio. This position provides a great opportunity for an experienced journals indexing manager to develop and drive strategies to expand the indexing coverage of our journals, as well as increase awareness, partnership and
engagement with indexing databases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead an indexing team in maintaining and expanding the indexing coverage of Frontiers’ editorial portfolio,
  • Manage and lead a team of Indexing Specialists: responsible for hiring, training and continued professional development,
  • Oversee the indexing strategy for all major indices and ensure compliance with indexing database requirements and publishing regulations,
  • Understand the technical requirements, processes and configurations for indexing journals and content, and oversee all indexing processes to ensure efficient and reliable article depositing and indexation.
  • Oversee all indexing pipelines, including monitoring of journal performance against indexing requirements, taking strategic decisions of when to put forward journals for indexation and tracking progress of indexing for all journals,
  • Oversee the preparation of indexing applications in collaboration with our Editorial and Business Intelligence teams,
  • Lead quality-control initiatives focused on indexing, efficiency and regulatory compliance,
  • Coordinate investigations when depositing or indexing errors arise to ensure correct coverage, inclusion and back indexation of content,
  • Manage regular auditing and analyses relevant to project tasks and identify opportunities to continuously optimize processes and guidelines,
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance partnerships between Frontiers and top indexing databases,
  • Develop strong working relationships with a wide range of indexing databases and investigate and approach potential new repository partners,
  • Provide advice related to indexing and strategic guidance to Editorial teams on how to develop journals in line with indexing requirements,
  • Liaise with product management and technical teams to recommend and coordinate improvements to products and digital tools for consistent depositing of content to external repositories,
  • Ensure all data sources related to indexing for integration into our internal data warehouse and relevant reports/dashboards are maintained.

Requirements

  • Solid experience in a similar role within academic publishing, experience in open access publishing is preferable,
  • Strong knowledge of indexing databases, including extensive experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships between publishers and indexing databases,
  • Demonstrated track record of managing and motivating remote, international teams,
  • Strong project management experience and a proven track record of process optimization,
  • Ability to work independently, be highly organized and meet deadlines,
  • Proactive attitude especially in troubleshooting, identifying issues and coordinating resolution between different departments,
  • Strong Team player with the capability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, international environment with excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Experience working with XML formats; Content transfer Protocols is a plus.
