Global Head of Journals Portfolio

A highly successful publisher of academic journals has a unique opportunity for a Global Head of Journals Portfolio to join their journals team. This is an exciting role as it will be responsible for the strategy, business planning, growth, direction and commercially effective management of a growing and successful portfolio of subscription and open access journals, and leading a team of Portfolio Managers. This team is part of a wider portfolio group with staff located globally, therefore we are looking for someone with great people management and leadership skills. This role can be worked on a fully remote basis or hybrid working, partly in the office and from home.

Some of the key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading a team of Portfolio Managers, ensuring objectives are clear and the team are motivated and incentivised.
  • Setting and driving strategies for the growth of the portfolio
  • Build strong working relationships with subject-specific societies and organisations to build and position the portfolio
  • Oversee contract renewals
  • Build topical knowledge of market need and competitor activity in your own subject specialisms, particularly open access publishing
  • Be aware of global changes to the process of monetizing content, to ensure the programme remains relevant and in pace with market dynamics
  • Deputise for the Global Portfolio Director as required

This is a fabulous role for someone with demonstrable experience in managing journals, who is looking for a new, challenging and highly responsible role. The successful person should be able to demonstrate:

  • A strong commercial understanding of subscription and open access journals
  • Substantial experience of managing journals in STM subjects, in particular open access publishing
  • Sound people management skills
  • In-depth knowledge of working with societies and other partner organisations
  • Proven success in acquiring, managing and publishing content
  • Experience of managing P&L accounts
  • A strong understanding of the publishing industry and market for research content generally.
