Since its inception as a literary quarterly in 1979, Granta has defined the contours of the literary landscape with its lists of the best young writers of each generation, spotlights on literatures from around the world, and themed issues interrogating the ways in which we live now. We are now looking for a new managing editor.

The managing editor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of production of the quarterly print issues of Granta magazine, liaising between the rest of the magazine team and external proofreaders, as well as authors, translators and artists to ensure that each piece is impeccably edited and proofed. They also work closely with the senior designer on the layout of the issue on InDesign.

The successful candidate will also contribute editorially, commissioning, pitching and editing material for the print and online issues. They will work closely with the Editor and Managing Director and contribute to the shaping of each edition of the magazine.

Responsibilities include:

– Overseeing production, maintaining and working to the magazine production schedule

– Collating proofs and inputting corrections on InDesign

– Liaising with printers

– Proofreading, copyediting and fact-checking as required

– Reading and evaluating submissions and pitches

– Maintaining and updating the Granta style guide

– Clearing permissions for images and text quotations used in the magazine

– Commissioning, pitching and editing material for print and online

The successful candidate will be an expert copy-editor and proofreader with meticulous attention to detail. They will also have strong fact-checking skills.They will be comfortable working to tight deadlines, and will demonstrate strong management and delegation skills.

Previous editing experience is essential, as is experience with Adobe InDesign.
