Rights & Contracts Manager, Maternity Cover

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and prestigious book and magazine publisher. We are looking to appoint a driven, highly organised individual with a keen commercial sense for a fixed term maternity cover of up to 13 months, ideal start date early October 2024. This role will include negotiating all head contracts for the books division as well as assisting and advising the editorial team on contractual and rights matters. The successful applicant will also be comfortable with licensing rights, in conjunction with senior management, in our titles to selected territories.

The Rights & Contracts Manager (Maternity Cover) reports to the Managing Director of Granta Publications. 

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Advising on the preparation of offers to acquire titles and supporting the editorial team. through the acquisition process, including ensuring all acquisitions are in line with the overall commercial policy of the company.
  • Negotiation of all publishing agreements for books published by Granta, including the drafting of contracts and negotiations of terms for head agreements; addenda; audio narration agreements; eBook licences; subsidiary rights agreements (including US, translation and audio rights).
  • Drafting and negotiation of contracts for contributors to Granta magazine and providing contractual and rights support to magazine colleagues.
  • Selling US, audio and selected foreign rights in Granta titles.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and budget forecasting for the rights department.
  • Preparation for and attending the London and Frankfurt Bookfairs.

Required qualities and skills:

  • Experienced with a wide range of acquisition and licensing agreements.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise effectively, as well as strong negotiation and sales skills.
  • Ideally proven experience of working with co-agents, scouts, foreign publishers and audio publishers.
  • The ability to work independently and as a team member.
