(Senior) Commissioning Editor

We are looking for a strongly market-focused Commissioning Editor (or Senior Commissioning Editor) to develop and deliver our publishing plans for Scottish secondary schools. This will lead to growth in revenues – and profit – as well as market share. The role is part of an experienced Secondary/FE commissioning team and reports to a Senior Publisher in that team. The Commissioning Editor is the key contact for our authors and partners and the driver of what we offer to secondary schools across Scotland.

In this role, you will:

  • Work collaboratively to maintain and deliver publishing plans for Hodder Gibson, so that they are well positioned for the future and able to deliver profitable long-term growth.
  • Own and drive our research into Scottish Secondary education, maintaining and communicating detailed market knowledge.
  • Utilise group platforms such as Boost to provide solutions for teachers and learners in Scotland.
  • Work effectively with authors, so that quality, market-focused materials are produced (print, digital and mixed media) and delivery deadlines are met.
  • Work closely with colleagues, particularly in Sales and Marketing, to ensure that your publishing is customer-focused, commercially viable and to contribute to realistic sales budgets.
  • Work constructively with Production, Design and Digital departments so that publishing schedules are met, and margin and stock levels maintained in line with budget requirements.
  • Maintain and build influential relationships with key and potential partners in education.

A full role description is available on request.

Who we are looking for

You will have a demonstrable track record in educational commissioning, ideally in Scottish education, and are now looking to take greater list ownership. Experience of working with awarding bodies and leading authors would be very valuable.

You will have worked on educational resources being developed in line with changing curriculum requirements and shown that you can balance curriculum demands with a deep knowledge of classroom teaching.

You will also have the personality to develop successful and long-lasting partnerships with authors and educational partners.

A background in, or knowledge of, the Scottish education system would be an advantage.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year plus bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, two volunteer days per year to use at your charity of choice, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

You would most-likely be based at our wonderful offices in Edinburgh; or we can discuss working from any of our national offices: in Banbury, Bristol, London, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield. We are happy to discuss a range of many flexible-working options.
