Managing Editor

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for an experienced candidate with a deep understanding of the editorial process, and a passion for supporting editors to create books of the highest quality, on time and to budget.

Reporting direct to the Managing Director of Quercus, you will be responsible for:

  • ensuring the efficiency of Quercus’ editorial processes
  • maintaining a strong pool of freelancers, and looking to broaden the diversity of our copy editors and proof readers
  • monitoring and driving progress of the critical path, across imprints and editions
  • offering strategic support, guidance and training to the editorial team, in order to maintain the highest possible standards
  • innovating new ways to prompt our teams to be ‘best in class’ for metadata

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who can demonstrate extensive knowledge of a book’s life, ideally with experience that spans illustrated as well as narrative publishing. You will have a passion for organisation, systems and smooth-running processes, and a strong awareness of how editorial decisions affect the margin and profitability of a list.

The ideal candidate will have the communication skills to balance the drive and diplomacy that make a great Managing Editor, forging strong relationships with the editorial teams and freelancers alike.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 volunteer days per year to use at your charity of choice, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

The role will be based at our London office, Carmelite House, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Who we are and what we do

Quercus is a young, dynamic, award-winning publisher, known as a hit-maker that regularly finds books that surprise and delight readers. We are international in our outlook – almost 40% of our authors are from 25 countries other than the UK and US – and have eight distinctive imprints that publish an exciting and diverse range of authors. From established bestsellers such as Elly Griffiths, Peter May, Beth O’Leary and Bill Bailey, to new voices such as Layla F. Saad, Candice Brathwaite and Amy Jeffs, what draws all our publishing together is the magic ‘quirk’ in Quercus: a commitment to independence, flair, warmth and creativity that has always marked out this young company.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
