Sales Manager

What you’ll be doing

The role encompasses selling to a wide range of different accounts including specialist bookshops and non-trade organisations such as charities and local government bodies. The job will also involve managing our bulk eBook sales via the JKP digital libraries.

You will champion JKP books within the wider business, presenting JKP trade titles to the Hachette UK and international sales reps and special sales teams, and ensure they have all necessary sales materials. You will also use your expertise to contribute to sales campaigns for specialist books on topics such as mental health and self-help across the John Murray Press division.

Who we are looking for

We have an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic sales professional with broad experience of the UK and export markets to sell our titles into trade and specialist accounts, and to manage our overseas distributors. We will consider applicants from both a publishing and non-publishing background.

We’d love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external contacts
  • Excellent communication skills to build relationships with people at all levels, including strong presentation skills
  • A strong instinct for identifying sales opportunities
  • A high standard of time-management, prioritisation and organisational skills
  • Experience of multi-tasking and prioritising a busy workload
  • Strong numerical, verbal and written skills, including report writing
  • Strong IT skills, particularly using Microsoft Office and sales reporting tools
  • A track record of achieving sales growth through specialist trade and non-trade channels (desirable)

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 28 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 community days per year, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

This role can be based at our London office, or at any of our new regional offices in Edinburgh, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Who we are and what we do

Jessica Kingsley Publishers is an award-winning global publisher committed to publishing books that celebrate diversity and advocate social change. For over thirty years, our market-leading autism publishing has played an important role in raising societal awareness of neurodiversity, and more recently our pioneering gender & sexuality list has rapidly grown to establish JKP as the world’s leading publisher for the transgender community. We also publish in the areas of mental health, social care, health and complementary medicine, and pride ourselves on the strong relationships we have with our communities and those who work with them.

In 2017, JKP became part of John Murray Press, an entrepreneurial division of Hachette UK with a focus on publishing books that can shape and shake our world. Earlier this year JKP won the accolade of Academic, Educational and Professional Publisher of the Year 2022 at The British Book Awards.

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
