Senior Commissioning Editor / Editorial Director

Would you like to work for HodderFaith? We’re looking for a Commissioning Editor to join us, working with existing authors and developing your own projects. Click here for more details:

What you’ll be doing

Work with the chairman and publishing director, as well as the wider team, on the overall strategic development of the Hodder Faith book publishing list. To acquire and commission books from new and existing authors across a broad theological range, so as to build the Hodder Faith list with strong, commercial titles in line with our strategic goals.

Who we are looking for

You will have proven experience in commissioning and editing books, and may already be building your own list. (This may or may not be for faith-based books, though you will have a strong and wide knowledge of the UK Christian Church scene, across denominations, as well as a good working knowledge of the Church in the United States).

You will be able to be clear-sighted about your commissioning strategy and willing to champion your books both internally and externally, taking full ownership of the publishing process.

The key qualities required are to be a team player with very strong editorial skills, a fast-moving work ethic and a creative approach to publishing and problem-solving. You will be comfortable working with high-profile authors and other senior stakeholders, and able to develop good relationships with staff across departments.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset, and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, two volunteer days per year to use at your charity of choice, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more.

The role will be based at our London office, Carmelite House, with a blend of in-office (minimum 3 days; usually Monday to Wednesday) and homeworking (2 days) each week.

Who we are and what we do

Hodder Faith publishes books under the Hodder & Stoughton imprint, and is part of John Murray Press, a publishing division which also includes John Murray, John Murray Learning, Two Roads, Nicholas Brealey and Jessica Kingsley. Hodder Faith publishes books across the theological spectrum both for Christians and for a wider audience for whom religious belief holds an important place in our cultural conversation. Our recently launched new imprint, Hodder Faith Young Explorers publishes bright and bold new Christian books for children.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
