Senior Commissioning Editor/Editorial Director (12 month FTC)

The successful candidate will be responsible for our romance imprint, Eternal, and our digital-led, commercial fiction imprint, Accent. You will be responsible for contributing to the overall strategic development of both lists, managing and growing sales of our existing authors and attracting new talent with digital bestseller potential. You will also manage an Editorial Assistant.

Who we are looking for

The ideal candidate will be passionate about romance and all genres of commercial fiction, with a proven track record in digital publishing and a demonstrable ability to spot and pre-empt trends in the digital market. You will be an enthusiastic champion of your books from conception through to publication and beyond – collaborating closely with marketing, publicity, sales and rights. You will have strong relationships within the industry and also be proactive in seeking out new projects. You may have managed people before and are excited to work closely with the rest of the team, nurturing talent in the more junior roles and supporting their professional development.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 community days per year, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

The role will be based at our London office, Carmelite House, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Who we are and what we do

Headline was founded in 1986 with a single promise at its heart: to publish the books people want to read. Sometimes, the simplest ideas are best.

Headline has spent over three decades creating bestsellers and our passion for the commercial means we are home to some of the UK’s biggest-selling authors and continue to invest in new talent with stellar sales potential.

Headline publishes some of the biggest names in fiction, including Martina Cole, Neil Gaiman, Maggie O’Farrell, Karen Rose, Jill Mansell, Victoria Hislop, Simon Scarrow, Dorothy Koomson and Deborah Harkness, and is proud to publish the books that immerse, entertain, and grip its readers.

About Headline Eternal:

Eternal is Headline’s romance imprint. Our mission is to ensure that any romance fan will find their heart’s desire within the books on our list and we are home to some of the best in the genre, from international bestsellers Jasmine Guillory, Lauren Layne, Jill Shalvis and Jo Watson to TikTok sensations including Sarah Adams, Mazey Eddings, Erin Sterling and Mariana Zapata.

About Headline Accent:

Accent is our nimble and digitally ambitious imprint at Headline, publishing addictive commercial fiction that keeps readers coming back for more. Whether you want to lose yourself in sweeping historical from authors like Jenni Keer, devour a long-running crime series from masters like Marsali Taylor, or discover a hot new favourite in talents like Heidi Stephens or Natalie Chandler, entertainment is always guaranteed.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.

If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.

The Book Trade Charity offers financial support to people looking to enter the book trade but who may struggle to afford the costs of attending interviews and undertaking junior roles. For more information visit www.booktradeentrysupport.org
