Senior Designer

The Senior Designer will look after all design aspects and brand identity for several ranges of reference and lifestyle books within Collins, most notably the National Trust range – a lifestyle range covering a diverse array of books from cookery and walking to gardening and wildlife. Working with many internal stakeholders – most notably the publishing, editorial and marketing teams – the designer will oversee the design and origination of covers, create a vision for the internal spreads and supervise the creation of (or develop themselves) specialist resources, such as commissioned photography or illustration, throughout the range. The designer will also work with the editorial teams to make sure all design material is fit for production.

 The design of these books is crucial to the continuing success of the ranges and as such this is a key role within the Creative team within Collins.

This role can be based in either Glasgow or London.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop samples and refine ideas to sell the project to key stakeholders

  • Make sure brand initiatives are reflected in design.

  • Manage cover design through all stages from initial ideas to supply of production ready files.

  • Create or oversee the creation of templates

  • Brief artworkers

  • Commission illustrators and photographers.

  • Attend and take a full part in photo shoots

  • Work with the project manager to give feedback on each editorial stage

  • Create marketing collateral for projects as required.

  • Update reprint covers – applying new designs, amending to newer templates as required.

  • Keep abreast of latest design trends – especially in illustration styles, photography, lifestyle and reference book developments.

Person Specification

  •  Knowledge of the lifestyle and illustrated reference publishing market(s) across the UK.
  • Demonstrable experience within a print design role, ideally with recognised design qualification.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, proactively and independently
  • Commercially astute
  • Good negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • A team player with strong communication and people skills.
