Hymns Ancient & Modern publishes around 80 new books annually through its main imprints, SCM Press and Canterbury Press, and manages Church House Publishing (the official publisher of the Church of England)  and Saint Andrew Press (the publishing imprint of the Church of Scotland).

We are looking for a dynamic Assistant Commissioning Editor to join our team, focusing in particular on academic titles published under the SCM Press imprint, and also supporting our wider publishing programme. Key Responsibilities:

  • Commissioning: Commission new scholarly titles for our SCM Press imprint, with the support and supervision of the Publishing Director.
  • Series Development: Collaborate with our Series Editors on existing academic series and identify and develop opportunities for new book series.
  • Editorial Support: Ensure timely and satisfactory manuscript delivery.
  • Publication Schedules: Assist in maintaining and updating book schedules.
  • Peer Review Coordination: Manage the peer review process.
  • Manuscript Assessment: Evaluate manuscripts and advise authors on revisions.
  • Artwork and Endorsements: Assist with cover artwork and endorsements.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Some previous experience in providing editorial or administrative support to commissioning editors in an academic publishing list.
  • A good working knowledge of the editorial process in the context of scholarly publishing.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Some interest in, or perhaps knowledge of, theology and related fields.
  • Able to work for part of the week from our London office in EC1Y, with hybrid working options, and occasional national and international travel required.

What We Offer:

  • Opportunities for growth and increased responsibilities.
  • A supportive and friendly working environment.
  • The opportunity to contribute to influential publications.
  • Other benefits include competitive salary and excellent pension scheme.
