Journal Development Manager – Open Access

A leading and growing not-for-profit STM Open Access journal publisher is recruiting for a Journal Development Manager to manage the strategic development of a selection of Open Access titles, maximising the value they create for the publisher and the communities they serve. Reporting to the Publisher this role will work collaboratively with the Associate Editorial Director and the Editorial Boards to implement and deliver journals strategies, ensuring all processes are effective and efficient, from submission through to publication.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and implement journal development strategies, considering individual journal performance and development needs
  • Build journal content by identifying and contacting senior researchers to encourage submissions
  • Work with Editorial Board Members to identify and commission appropriate reviews, commentaries, editorially led thematic series and collections, and liaise with the appropriate in-house teams to take these forward
  • Increase the journals’ visibility, in terms of accesses, share of citations and altmetrics through article inflow, commissioning and collaboration with the Marketing and Outreach team
  • Work with the Open Research team to support the development of Open Science practices within the journals’ communities
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board members and other stakeholders
  • Monitor journal performance against targets to identify areas for improvement and take timely action
  • In collaboration with the Marketing and Outreach team, ensure that the journal has a clear marketing strategy, approve marketing materials and ensure that suitable USPs are available to the marketing team for use in campaigns.

 

Experience

Ideal candidates will have experience in working in scholarly publishing driving journal development. Excellent business acumen and strong analytical skills will be required with demonstrable examples of strategic thinking and delivering results. Knowledge of developments in STM publishing and an awareness of external influences particularly funding trends is required. Prospective candidates must be highly organised and have excellent time management skills and able to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
