Junior Commissioning Editor – Medical & Healthcare Publishing

A highly successful, global publisher of scientific and academic books and journals based in London, is looking to recruit a motivated Commissioning editor to join their Medicine & Healthcare journals team. This role is a fabulous opportunity for an ambitious biomedical graduate looking to work with a prestigious and well-known scientific list of journals in healthcare and medicine or a biomedical graduate with around 6 months to a year’s experience in medical/healthcare publishing, looking to learn all aspects of the commissioning process. The Commissioning Editor role will be accountable for the commissioning and content management of an assigned list of highly acclaimed journals (round 2-3 journals) to ensure that standards and deadlines are met for your assigned journals.  Relevant training will be given in all aspects of the role.

The commissioning editor role is an important role for the list and your specific responsibilities will involve soliciting high quality content relevant to the journals coverage, whilst working closely with the journals editor and editorial boards to ensure that content is relevant. This will involve commissioning timely drug profile/evaluation articles and commissioning fringe articles according to your brief.

You will work on 2-3 journals and will work closely with authors during manuscript preparation and processing, and build relationships with editorial boards and key opinion leaders.

Other areas of responsibilities will include processing track papers and language editing as and when required.  It will also be your responsibility to ensure that company review of drug profiles/evaluations is undertaken. The commissioning editor will liaise with an external company to peer-review all content and ensure that all amendments are actioned and that all guidelines and policies are followed, including editorial policies and disclosure information.

Writing news stories for the website/newsletter/LinkedIn groups will also be part of this exciting and varied roles, as you build an awareness of the industry. You will sometimes also work with marketing and production to promote your journals and ensure issues go to press on time.

This is a fantastic role for an enthusiastic and highly motivated biomedical graduate, who is a self-starter, looking for a serious career in scientific/medical publishing and is looking for an opportunity within commissioning.

The successful person will be a graduate with a biomedical or life science degree (essential) who is able to demonstrate an interest in scientific/medical publishing. You may have some proven editorial experience within biomedical publishing which you are looking to build upon; possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal; able to work as part of a team and have excellent time management skills.  You will be highly organised with the ability to prioritise your work and work to strict deadlines.
