Organisational structure and management

  • Role reports to Director of Operations
  • Key interfaces:
    • External suppliers/freelancers: ghostwriters, interviewers, editors, proofreaders
    • In house: senior management team

Scope of the role

Our bespoke projects require a strong mix of both project management and editorial skills. Working closely with the Director of Operations, you will assist with the interpretation of our customers’ needs, and design, cost and present a project plan. You will be responsible for developing a pool of talented freelancers from which to draw on a project by project basis. You will also be responsible for editing the manuscript throughout it’s development, and project managing all aspects of the project’s delivery to the customer.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Project manage a portfolio of high priority, high revenue, demanding and complex projects, and smaller bespoke projects as required
  • Working closely with the Director of Operations to establish project feasibility, including budgeting and monitoring detailed project costs on an ongoing basis
  • Recruit, train and manage freelancers and contractors to deadlines and within budget
  • Edit manuscripts for spelling, grammar, punctuation, sense, factual accuracy, structure, detail and voice
  • Methodically organise all project content, including text, artwork, photos and other visual elements to deliver an approved book ready for typesetting
  • Build excellent rapport with customers, liaising with them face to face when Covid restrictions permit
  • Ensure client invoices are raised as required
  • Quantitative analysis of project processes, including manipulating and analysing data to inform decision making and process improvements

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a friendly, confident and professional manner
  • Experienced in communicating with demanding authors, as well as clients, freelancers and in house staff
  • Experienced editor, with high standard of English and knowledge of current editorial conventions. American English editorial experience is a strong advantage
  • Excellent attention to detail, and familiarity with adhering to a house style and BSI proofreading marks
  • Meticulously organised, resourceful and able to use own initiative
  • Ability to problem solve when faced with challenges presented by both internal and external stakeholders
  • Must be able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, multi-tasking and prioritising workload
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, including Word (including track changes, cover pages, creation and editing of macros, templates etc.) and Excel to manage project budgets, costings and estimating tools
  • Familiarity with CRM required and IT reporting systems an advantage
  • Commercial approach and ability to manage projects to their own P&L
  • Awareness of relevant industry developments and technology

As delegated by manager

  • Implement new developments and identify areas for improvement
  • Flag and agree exceptions to standard specifications and policies
  • Oversee documentation of processes

Salary: £30,000 per annum
