Associate Literary Agent / Literary Agent Assistant (dependent on experience)

Madeleine Milburn Ltd is looking for an Associate Literary Agent or Literary Agent Assistant to provide support to Emma Bal in the non-fiction department, and - if experience is appropriate - with a view to building their own list of authors, expanding the agency's dynamic non-fiction offering.

The successful candidate will be passionate, ambitious and hardworking, with a curiosity about the world and how non-fiction books of all kinds can inspire. They should have excellent administrative, organizational and communication skills. This vital role is best suited to someone with publishing experience at a junior level, with a desire to make the next step or sidestep in their career towards becoming a Literary Agent. Above all, they should want to assist in cultivating and managing writers’ careers and contribute actively to discovering new voices in non-fiction across a wide range of subject areas.

We would like to hear from people with publishing experience from a range of departments, interested in different types of non-fiction, as we are looking to keep expanding the department in exciting directions. As part of a proactive and motivated team, your role will demand staying well informed about the market, non-fiction trends and the zeitgeist. You will be asked to critically engage in book ideas and assess their merit. You will have great attention to detail, deliver consistent and confident author care, and have the initiative and drive to seek out talent in the areas that interest you.

This is an ideal chance to support and learn from an established Non-fiction Literary Agent. The right candidate has the potential to progress quickly within a highly ambitious and approachable agency.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): supporting and working alongside Emma Bal, assisting with the day-to-day running of the non-fiction department such as assisting with contracts, author comms, chasing payments, database and website admin, reading submissions, editorial support, generating book ideas and finding new talent.

Benefits of the role include:

•           Hybrid working arrangement

•           Flexible working hours (more details will be given at interview)

•           Summer hours: finishing at 1pm for the months of July and August.

•           Staff are entitled to two weeks of concurrent remote work under our Agency Nomad scheme, allowing them to work remotely from anywhere in the world.

Please apply with your CV and a covering letter that includes your notice period (if relevant) and the last 5 books you have enjoyed. Applications are to be sent to Emma Bal at jobs@madeleinemilburn.com by the end of Friday 22nd November 2024.

We reserve the right to close the recruitment process early if we have found the right candidate.
