Junior Designer

We are looking to expand our team at Magic Cat Publishing and take on a junior designer in Spring 2023 to assist our art director with a focus on growing the packaging list that coexists alongside our trade list. 

We are an award-winning independent children’s publishers founded in 2019. The candidate will make up part of our small creative team working together from our office in London Fields for part of the week, with the ability to work flexibly for part of the week if desired. 

The ideal candidate will have a keen design eye, specifically in typography and making visual and editorial content work together seamlessly. A strong passion for children’s publishing and illustration is equally important, a grasp of styles and formats and the wider market of the book world, and illustration world, will both need to be harnessed to bring your imagination and ideas to our books. 

You will work across a variety of book formats including gift, novelty and non-fiction, as well as helping with the day to day support of design work and design admin across the business. 

]Example responsibilities: 

  • Taking on the design of spin off titles and series extensions from start to finish, from creating and managing the development of the book layouts throughout the duration of the project, to illustrator direction and pitching cover designs.  
  • Arranging titles for print and overseeing sign off and proof stages.  
  • Designing pitch materials for new projects. 
  • Working on marketing design such as catalogues and sales materials such as dummies for bookfairs. 
  • Monitor and manage the workflow of deliverables for co-edition partners as well as being the port of call for sharing files or archiving. 
  • Overseeing and outputting any design requests on reprints and backlist titles. 
  • Assisting on other design tasks including marketing materials and digital assets

Requirements: 

  • Confidence to communicate visual opinions and ideas within the creative team.
  • Proficient in Abode InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise with flexibility. 
  • Ability to work independently and carefully manage your workload and deadlines. 
  • 2 years prior publishing experience is desirable, but relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
