Project Editor

The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries.

Project Editor 
£27,957 per annum
Full-time, 40 hours per week
Fixed Term Contract for 22 months
Site and Home based (up to 2 days per week)

We are looking for a highly creative Project Editor to manage a number of titles from across the Gallery’s publishing programme, from conception to publication.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience of project-editing complex illustrated books, with a good knowledge of the whole publication process and experience of liaising with authors and freelancers. They will have excellent editorial skills with the ability to copy-edit, condense, adapt, summarise, rewrite and restructure text as required. The post-holder must have a proven ability to manage multiple projects, with competing priorities, simultaneously as the ability to work calmly under pressure to meet deadlines is essential.
