OA Managing Editor - STM

Our client, a leading provider of tools and services to the research community, is seeking an experienced Managing Editor to join the team to oversee the scientific and editorial pre-publication checks, develop and oversee editorial policies, recruit, train and manage the in-house editorial team.

This is a rare opportunity to be involved in helping to really change the way scientific publishing is done and you will be responsible for development of new strategies for improving the user’s experience during publication and peer review, and the adaptation of existing policies and processes in response to requests made by different clients. The main responsibilities include:

  • Line managing, training and developing the editorial and production team
  • Building relationships with external scientific advisors and other major academic groups
  • Supporting these groups in developing a framework of policies and guidelines for their publishing platforms that serve the needs of their research communities.
  • Developing and implementing editorial policies and guidelines
  • Providing continuous review and adjustment of the publishing framework
  • Providing close oversight of pre-publication checks
  • Developing deep knowledge of open data policies and open science developments
  • Providing excellent editorial service to authors, referees and readers
  • Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Dealing with queries relating to the various publishing platforms as necessary.

 

The successful individual should have either a strong background in life science publishing or life science education with wider STM Publishing experience (preferably in Open Access). Strong knowledge of peer-review processes and publishing ethics along with line management is required. You will need lots of enthusiasm, the ability to prioritise a challenging workload, have plenty of initiative and problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and good verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate will need to be a strong team player who enjoys interacting with people, and be highly computer literate.
