Marketing & Publicity Assistant

We have an exciting entry level position available for a Marketing & Publicity Assistant to join our dynamic, fast-moving team.  No prior publishing experience is required for this entry level position; however the successful candidate will be passionate, organized and creative. We are looking for someone enthusiastic, with a strong knowledge of multiple social media platforms, a keen eye for detail, good organization and time management skills. A passion for books is a must!

Oneworld is one of Britain’s leading independent publishers, and was named Independent Publisher of the Year at the 2023 British Book Awards. We publish around seventy new books a year across a range of non-fiction and fiction, and in recent years, our books have won Booker Prizes, the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the Diverse Book Award and the Orwell Prize.

Reporting to the Marketing Manager, your primary role will be to help market and publicise Oneworld fiction and non-fiction books and authors across all our imprints, including our commercial fiction imprint Magpie Books and children’s imprint Rock the Boat. As such, you will have a keen interest in all aspects of publishing, including literary fiction, non-fiction, crime fiction, commercial fiction, young adult fiction and books for younger readers. You will be working closely alongside the marketing and publicity teams, as well as the sales and editorial teams.  

Your duties will include, but not be limited to:  

  • To assist the work of the publicity and marketing departments as needed.  
  • To help build, manage, and create content for our social media presence on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, while keeping abreast and making the most of digital trends.
  • To monitor the metadata for online retailers such as Amazon and update copy, keywords and images to improve SEO.
  • Maintaining relationships with online bloggers and influencers and curating mailing lists to mobilise their support.
  • Managing and updating our website and supporting website development.  
  • Helping to organise our presence at book fairs and conferences such as London Book Fair and the Young Adult Literature Convention.
  • To create newsletters for both Oneworld, Rock the Boat and our Academic list for distribution to our subscribers.
  • To research and liaise with societies and other like-minded organisations with reference to potential partnerships.  
  • To help the publicity department with tasks such as sorting proofs and advance copies as they arrive, organising proof mailings, and creating press releases for key paperback campaigns.  
  • To help with organisation of events and signings, and attend these events as required.

Skills required include:  

  • Strong organisational skills.  
  • Excellent time management.  
  • The ability to work to deadlines.  
  • A strong understanding of social media and willingness to keep up-to-date with trends and developments.
  • A demonstrable passion for books across different genres, and a desire to keep up-to-date with the latest market trends.
  • Energy and determination.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with a good eye for detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team as required, with great interpersonal skills.

Salary: Starting at £24,000, depending on experience

Location: Central London/Hybrid  

This role is based in our London Office with a hybrid working model of four days in office/one day home working. From time to time, attendance of events on evenings and weekends may be required.
