Assistant Editor, Square Peg (Vintage)

Our publishing house, Vintage, is looking for an entrepreneurial, meticulous, and creative Assistant Editor to work with the Publishing Director on the Square Peg list.

Square Peg is a highly focused, commercial non-fiction imprint that spans narrative and memoir, food and drink, wellbeing and nature, pop culture and activism. We seek out the ideas and stories that inspire how we live today.  Our mission is to publish books that educate, empower, and entertain various audiences.

Recent publications include The Sweet Roasting Tin by million-copy selling Rukmini Iyer, the award-winning A Dutiful Boy by Mohsin Zaidi, Carefree Black Girls by Zeba Blay, The Swan by Stephen Moss, Dave Goulson’s Gardening for Bumblebees and Vee Kativhu’s EmpoweredWe are proud of the voices we champion.

You’ll bring with you a passion for popular culture and a commercial outlook with a keen eye for the latest trends. Reporting to the Publishing Director, your role will be to assist and monitor the full book production cycle. You will help to see manuscripts through copy-editing, proofreading and production, as well as editing some yourself and participating in the creative side of the publishing process. In due course, you may also be encouraged to commission a few books.

You will read and report on submissions and write copy and will need to work to deadlines when under pressure. You will need bags of initiative and will be highly engaged with social and traditional media. This role involves black and white as well as four-colour books, so having an eye for design, strong planning and scheduling skills, and an interest in cookery is important. You will be a self-starter, happy working in a small team and an excellent communicator with a focus on author care and agent relationships, and a zeal for championing the list in-house and beyond.

You will need prior editorial experience, which makes this is a great opportunity for any existing Editorial Assistants to gain experience at a dynamic, fun and varied list.

If you’re interested in joining Square Peg, please apply with your CV and cover letter by Monday 3rd January 2022. You can expect to hear back from us by end of January; interviews will initially be held virtually.

What you can expect from us:
