Sales Manager (Cornerstone)

Cornerstone is a division within the iconic publisher Penguin Random House. Its books celebrate a spectacular range of voices across a rainbow of categories, proudly dotted all over the bookshop.

Six distinct imprints make up Cornerstone: Century, Del Rey, Inklore, Hutchinson Heinemann, #MerkyBooks, and Cornerstone Press — and every Cornerstone book goes on to become a Penguin paperback. Each imprint has its own focus, but the division’s overall power is its breadth. Across these worlds, Cornerstone has a knack for publishing an enviably high number of bestsellers, prize winners and culture-shaping books, attracting many of the greatest authors alive today.

Cornerstone’s mission is simple: publish truly brilliant books that people will love. Cornerstone books are enjoyed all over the world, helping people continually rediscover the joy of reading, whether unearthing new perspectives, growing as a person, or even escaping reality altogether.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a commercially-savvy, unflappableproactive and team focused Sales Manager to join the sales team. The Cornerstone sales team pride ourselves on being a team of experts who are the first port of call for the customer, and importantly, we all really enjoy what we do and have fun doing it.  The role will report to the Sales Director, the successful candidate will line manage three experienced Key Account Managers and help develop and implement our day-to-day retail and divisional strategy.

This is a key role within UK sales, where you’ll have the opportunity to help shape how PRH approach the market and most importantly, our retailer relationships. We’re looking for someone who prides themselves on their communication skills and ability to maintain relationships, both internally and externally.

We are looking for someone curious, with a strong commercial instinct and an understanding of the UK book market. Someone who enjoys analysing the market and emerging trends and uses that expertise to inform our retailer sell-ins, as well as Cornerstone’s acquisitions strategy and budget. We are looking for someone who wants to take ownership over the sales strategy on key parts of the list, including Hutchinson Heinemann, #MerkyBooks, and Cornerstone Press, and who would also be ready to deputise for the Sales Director when needed.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • You’ll have a strong sales background in publishing, with experience managing key accounts across large UK retailers.

  • You’ll be commercially focused and analytically minded, showing that you can use data and insight from the market to influence sound business decisions.

  • Connecting with colleagues, customers and the team is central to the role, you’ll adopt a collaborative approach, work closely with stakeholders to problem solve, be comfortable taking ownership and responsibility, and know when to delegate.

  • Cornerstone is an incredibly exciting place to work, and curiosity is at the heart of everything we do, we are looking for someone to share in that curiosity and inspire it in others.

  • The Cornerstone sales team are incredibly ambitious and as manager and leader you will foster this appetite for growth and embody a growth mindset.
