Text Designer

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced typographer to join our Text Design team within the Publishing Operations department.

The Team

Text Design are responsible for maintaining and improving typographic quality through the setting of standards across Penguin Random House. The team guides and shapes everything from the choice of typeface to their behaviour on the page. We ensure best practice on font use and guidance on font purchase, ensuring legal compliancy across the publishing group.

Working closely with in-house publishing teams, we create and commission book layouts, integrated graphics, and plate sections for all the Penguin Random House imprints.

Role Summary

As a text designer at PRH, you are part of a team with diverse responsibilities. Your general goal is to maintain and improve typographic use.

Within our team, you get to create typographic systems and tools (InDesign templates and information design reference files) as part of a live library available across the business.

You will also create bespoke book interiors, integrated graphics, and plate sections for the insides of Penguin Random House titles.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain and improve existing InDesign templates for the insides of books across PRH Divisions

• Capture requirements and design whole [new] text design systems

• Update mark-ups and specs for external typographers and typesetters

• Conduct designer-led reviews of workflows in place from a critical on-the-job perspective to automate repetitive tasks

• Take full ownership of bespoke hierarchically complex text solutions

• Communicate with senior stakeholders confidently

• Pro-actively keep up to date with the typographic industry

Required Skills and Experience:

• Proven experience in typography and book design

• InDesign [optimum] fluency

• Proven experience of successfully optimising and delivering hierarchically complex text solutions

• Information design skills, with a focus on the highest legibility and readability

• Font licencing proficiency (an understanding of font development would be an advantage but is not essential)

• Organised and able to manage varied priorities to ensure successful delivery to required deadlines

• Ensuring required elements meet PRH standards and are within budgets

• Confident communicator (verbally and written)

• You’ll be a team player but equally happy to work independently using your own initiative

Salary: circa £30,000 depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus benefits.
