Mid-Weight Designer

Post Wave Children’s Books is looking for an exceptional designer to join our new creative team.

We are seeking an experienced children’s book designer with stand-out typographic and layout skills, an amazing design eye and a highly creative streak. You will collaborate closely with our existing authors and illustrators, while also seeking out the very best in new illustration talents.

You will produce design concepts for illustrated non-fiction, picture books, pre-school and novelty titles that are visually stunning, highly commercial, inclusive and accessible. In addition to designing your own titles and briefing illustrators, you will oversee freelance designers and provide guidance on layouts and covers, working alongside the Design Director.

As well as managing a range of book projects, you will also assist with day-to-day design support and administration across the business. We are a small team and as such the ability to communicate effectively is essential.

This position reports to the Design Director and will be based at our central London offices. We offer hybrid working, with a minimum of three days a week in the office.

Responsibilities include:

• Conceiving and implementing design concepts under the Design Director’s guidance.
• Working closely with Editorial to create original, engaging and commercial books.
• Sourcing and directing illustration talent and freelance designers to bring the very best out of their work.
• Creating consistently outstanding cover designs.
• Preparing files for print and overseeing proof stages. 
• Managing workflow of design deliverables with freelance designers and co-edition partners.
• Designing and preparing pitches, presentations and marketing materials.
• Keeping ahead of the latest design and visual trends in children’s publishing.

Requirements:

• Proficiency in Abode InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat.
• Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.
• Exceptional organisation skills and with the ability to manage multiple projects independently.
• Good working knowledge of print processes and pre-press for publishing, as well as experience working with co-editions.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• At least 4 years of prior publishing experience.
