Managing Designer, Priddy Books

Want to be part of the team that creates the first book a child might ever read? We’re looking for a creative and organised Managing Designer to work on our range of bestselling books for preschool children.

Priddy Books was started with one simple aim: to publish innovative, early learning books for babies, toddlers and young children. It was founded in 2000, with the aim of educating children through fun, informative and engaging books. Priddy Books has gone on to create some of publishing’s most enduring and successful early learning titles – such as First 100 Words and See, Touch, Feel – which have sold millions of copies to date.

We are looking for a Managing Designer to lead our small but talented team of designers, publishing more than 30 titles a year. They will be tasked with coming up with great new ideas and formats, as well as bringing a fresh eye to some of our most loved series. As well as managing the team, in this creative role they will also get the chance to design a few books themself. The successful candidate must have a strong commercial sense and will work very closely with the editorial team.

The Managing Designer must be an experienced children’s designer capable of staying calm under pressure and managing schedules and budgets. They must have a good knowledge of the preschool book market and international publishing, and they mustn't be afraid to challenge the status quo!

This is an exciting opportunity for a designer looking to take the next step in their career and help create books beloved by kids around the world.

Key tasks of the role include:

• Manage the day-to-day design development of 30-35 front list titles per year for the Priddy list, including seasonal, learning, and novelty books.
• Management of design staff in the Priddy team to ensure high levels of productivity, commitment and morale.
• Responsible for the training and development of members of design staff in the Priddy team, with particular focus on junior members of staff.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and knowledge:

    • Strong people management skills
    • Able to organise, prioritize and manage workflow and to meet deadlines
    • Excellent knowledge of the book design process from start to finish

We’d love it if you had:

      • Good knowledge of preparing novelty files for printers
      • Knowledge of designing pop-ups/flaps and other novelties
      • Experience of organising and running photoshoots
