Production Manager

A highly successful academic publishing organisation is seeking an experienced Production Manager / Head of Production to join their Edinburgh office, to lead and manage a friendly and supportive team and manage the smooth and effective production of their high-quality, and varied, portfolio of books and journals.

Reporting to the CEO and a member of the Executive Management Group, the Production Manager will have overall responsibility for all aspects of the book and journal production process post-handover, working closely with other Heads of Department. They will manage an experienced production team and be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically particularly in relation to production systems. The Production Manager will oversee the management of outsourced editorial and production freelancers and work closely with global print suppliers ensuring print costs are kept within agreed budgets without compromising quality. Responsibilities include (amongst others):

·To seek the most competitive prices for print and digital production and maintain the best standards.
·Purchase print at competitive prices and control reprints and automatic stock replenishment titles and place orders in a timely fashion.
·Manage all print, delivery and invoicing of co-edition imports and exports with US publishing partner where relevant.
·Commission and manage external editorial and global production suppliers to meet schedule and cost targets.
·Organise print and delivery of titles in several global locations.
·Track and monitor costs, and manage and monitor supplier performance.
·Evaluate in-house production information systems so that they are fit for purpose.
·Seek to improve workflows to achieve best standards and where possible challenge traditional thinking and processes.

The successful Production Manager / Head of Production will have a broad knowledge of production processes and be familiar with trends in eBooks and digital publishing, and have a thorough understanding of modern book production methods and systems, both digital and litho. The Production Manager will have strong leadership qualities and proven line management experience.
