The British Museum publishes award-winning illustrated books for general readers, families, academics and students. The Sales and Marketing Manager: Publishing provides a vital role for the Publishing team, helping to maximise sales and generate revenue from book sales both inside and outside the Museum.

Working closely with colleagues in the Publishing team, curatorial departments and with the Museum’s dedicated Press and Marketing team, this role will develop and manage the marketing and publicity strategy to support and deliver the commercial publishing activities for the Museum. The Sales and Marketing Manager: Publishing will create and implement the marketing and publicity programme for new and backlist titles including, generating sales material, managing public relations for the Publishing team, seeking opportunities for events at book festivals, and reaching out to press contacts with a view to expanding the reach of the Museum’s publications and maximising potential revenue. Working closely with the Production Controller the role will assist with the analysis of stock and sales to ensure key titles are kept in print and will help to identify titles in need of refreshing for new audiences. The role requires attendance and management of book fair activities and representing the Publishing team at other sales and distribution conferences.

This is an exciting role for an outgoing and creative sales and marketing professional with experience in the publishing sector and a genuine interest in the Museum and its activities.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Create, implement and manage all aspects of the Museum’s commercial publishing marketing and publicity programme for both frontlist and backlist titles.
  • Assist the Head of Publishing with the management of UK and international distributors and to help build business through publicity and marketing activities.
  • Work closely with the Project Editor and Development Editor to generate sales material for frontlist titles, including writing marketing copy for advance information sheets, and preparing sales presentations for conferences as and when required.
  • Manage and attend sales and marketing events and act as a representative of the Museum at international book fairs.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with key book reviewers, Press contacts, buyers and bloggers to help the Museum’s publications reach the widest possible audience.
  • Assist the Production Controller with the analysis of stock and sales and contribute to reprint planning meetings.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will have sales and marketing experience within a publishing or related business and be confident presenting complex ideas in easily digested formats for publicity. Strong planning and organisational skills will be essential along with the ability to manage and develop good relationships with external clients/customers.
