Senior Commissioning Editor

We have an exciting opportunity within Educational Publishing to join a global publisher as their Senior Commissioning Editor for Early Years! You'll be commissioning and developing the company's prestigious children's portfolio for the UK and International market. As Senior Commissioning Editor - Early Years, your main remit will be to commission new print and digital projects for an early years' audience in line with the publishing strategy and aligned to the home sector publishing objectives. Responsibilities will include (amongst others):

  • Commission agreed projects, identifying and contracting suitable contributors to create exciting and innovative Early Years products
  • Develop creative projects from own ideas based on research and market insight
  • Establish and maintain relationships with agents, authors and illustrators to champion books through the publishing process
  • Manage multiple projects across a broad range of Early Years products for differing global markets
  • Assess market needs and gain valuable customer/consumer insight
  • Develop and maintain strong UK and international market knowledge through own research
  • Directly approach and contract potential authors/illustrators with your own original publishing ideas as well as contributing to in-house creative forums
  • Actively solicit and acquire proposals and concepts from agents
  • Negotiate commercial terms and issue contracts
  • Present new proposals at internal publishing meetings

The ideal Senior Commissioning Editor will be a creative, commercial and ambitious Commissioning Editor with a passion for children's books and have excellent early years' market knowledge and insight into the latest trends, and reader needs at this level. With strong commissioning experience, and ideally an existing relevant network, you'll have the ability to connect, communicate and inspire in order to grow your portfolio, always looking to innovate and seek out new opportunities.
