Senior Illustrated Books Designer – Penguin General Design

We are looking for a Senior Illustrated Books Designer to shape and lead our diverse list of illustrated books from Iggy Pop to Meera Sodha and Dr Rangan Chatterjee.

This is an exciting opportunity to work for the biggest publisher in the world, creating and forging a design identity for our illustrated books at Penguin General imprints: Viking, Penguin Life, Hamish Hamilton, Figtree and Penguin Ireland.

You will be an experienced conceptual and ideas driven designer with a keen eye for detail. Able to lead a project from pitch to print, with knowledge and experience of all levels of the design and production process. You will have the initiative to delegate tasks when needed and at all times ensuring the project is on track.

A natural communicator who is able to connect and establish key relationships across the business with ease. Your creative eye and unrivalled imagination will enable you to bring new ideas to life and you won’t shy away from taking creative risks to achieve fantastic results with each project.

Required Skills

  • You are highly creative and able to make each book fit within its own unique commercial environment.
  • Able to communicate your ideas clearly, articulately and confidently, with the ability to receive feedback constructively and positively.
  • You have exceptional organization skills and are able to bring a project home on time and on budget. Good at problem solving; foreseeing issues and being proactive in resolving them.
  • You’ll be attending editorial and production startup meetings - agreeing schedules and print costs that will define the project. When necessary meeting with the author to understand and engage with their vision.
  • You have experience in commissioning artists and illustrators, and Art Directing photoshoots: Photographers, stylists, locations. Managing budgets and schedules thereof.
  • You are able to generate, foster and maintain a network of key external suppliers: photographers, illustrator’s freelance designers, home economists, props stylist, clothes stylist, hair and make-up artists. 
  • You are well versed in Production techniques and constraints and are able to design within the limitations they create. You will be responsible for ensuring files are set up to a high standard, enabling them to print effectively.
  • Extensive knowledge of systems and print design programs including InDesign, Illustrator, Bridge and Photoshop
