Imprint Lead – Serpent's Tail

Profile is an award-winning independent publishing house looking for an experienced editor and publisher to lead our beloved Serpent’s Tail and Tuskar Rock imprints.

Serpent’s Tail has been at the forefront of independent literary publishing for nearly forty years, publishing names including Esi Edugyan, Carmen Maria Machado, Alain Mabanckou, Torrey Peters and Karen Joy Fowler. Tuskar Rock publishes authors including Chris Kraus, László Krasznahorkai and Constance Debré.

We are seeking a bright, creative, ambitious person to shape the list’s commercial and critical success for years to come.

You will be at senior commissioning editor level or above and have at least 5 years’ experience of commissioning and publishing showstopping literary fiction and non-fiction. You will be ready to enjoy the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit of independent publishing, and to invest deeply in the quality and success of your titles and the list as a whole. Demonstrably strong editing and pitching skills, critical judgement, author care, agent contacts and knowledge of the literary market are essential.

Reporting to the Publisher, this role is London-based, with at least three days per week in-person attendance at our Farringdon office, and flexible working arrangements by agreement. Competitive salary dependent on experience. Benefits include 25 days holiday (rising to 30 days with length of service) plus bank holidays, pension, life insurance, annual bonus scheme for all employees.
