Editor, Crime & Thriller Fiction

Location: London (Central)

Type: Editorial

Status: Permanent, Full time

Salary Description: Competitive plus Benefits

Reference: S&S UK ED/FICTION AD

Description:

Simon & Schuster Adult Fiction publishes a wide and eclectic mix of authors ranging across commercial fiction and literary fiction. Home to bestselling and award-winning authors such as Philippa Gregory, Nicci French, Ruth Ware, Louise Candlish, Chris Carter, Santa Montefiore and Fredrik Backman, as well as debut authors Michael Bennett, Kellye Garrett and David Heska Wanbli Weiden, Simon & Schuster Adult Fiction is committed to publishing a broad range of diverse stories for everyone. Simon & Schuster UK won Publisher of the Year at the 2022 British Book Awards.

Job Profile:

An exciting opportunity to join the award-winning team at Simon & Schuster, Publisher of the Year 2022. We are looking for a highly skilled and talented editor to join the adult fiction team, working on the crime and thriller list. In the role you will help us to publish the most exciting and distinctive talent, championing books and authors with a clear vision, creativity, and both commercially and profitably.

The Role:

Working closely with the deputy publishing director for fiction on the crime and thriller list, the editor will be responsible for taking books from manuscript delivery to printer-ready files and delivering them on time and within budget. This will include structural and line editing, proofreading, and liaising with authors, agents and freelancers. It will also require liaising with internal departments on all aspects of the publishing business. The editor will work on multiple projects independently as well as supporting the deputy publishing director on both frontlist and backlist titles.

You will write and review copy on jackets as well as working closely with outside copyeditors and proof-readers to ensure quality, clarity and consistency following the company style guide. You will be responsible for the accuracy and quality of metadata and coding on our title management systems; and help to create AIs and catalogue copy.

While this is a non-commissioning role, there will be plenty of opportunities to develop your editorial skills further. Outside your project editor tasks, you will read and report on submissions and contribute to brainstorms and the discussion of new acquisitions.

The Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable enthusiasm for and awareness of the crime and thriller genre and market. You will be a highly motivated, creative, committed and flexible individual with excellent editorial skills, a forensic eye for detail and the ability to work on several projects at the same time, whilst maintaining the standards expected by readers.

Previous experience within the books and entertainment industries would be an advantage, as would experience of working within an editorial environment, but we are keen to hear from the widest range of candidates and we’re open to different types of experience.

This is a full-time permanent role, with a flexible working arrangement including working from home and in the S&S UK office in London.

Simon & Schuster UK is an equal opportunities employer committed to the goal of building a culturally diverse workforce. We welcome applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity.

Deadline:

Monday 15th August 2022.
