Description:

Simon & Schuster Children’s Books is one of the leading children’s publishers in the UK, dedicated to immersing children of all ages in diverse and creative reading experiences, encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Founded in 1998, it has a record of continuously strong sales, prestigious awards, and numerous high quality and bestselling titles and series. Bestselling and award-recognised authors and illustrators on the list include Ben Miller, Adam Silvera, Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, Michelle Harrison, Smriti Halls and Steve Small, Nadia Shireen, Katie and Kevin Tsang and Danielle Jawando.

Job Profile:

We’re looking for a highly skilled Editor to join our dynamic children’s editorial team to support our ambitious growth plans. In the role you’ll help us to publish the most exciting and distinctive talent, championing books, authors and illustrators with a clear vision, creatively, commercially and profitably. This is a hugely exciting time to be joining S&S and a terrific opportunity to work on – and help shape – a list that’s packed with popular, acclaimed and stand-out books for children.

The Role:

Reporting to the Publishing Director, you will support on a number of key fiction and non-fiction projects (working with the Publishing Director and Editorial Director) as well as manage your own titles from manuscript delivery to printer-ready files, including structural and line editing, proofreading, liaising with authors, agents, freelancers and internal colleagues, copywriting and using title management systems. You will read and report on submissions and contribute to creative conversations about growing the list. There is the potential to commission although this is not a core part of the role.

Your Profile:

You will have a proven passion for children’s books and the diversification of publishing, and demonstrable experience working in an editorial role, preferably in children’s fiction. Some non-fiction experience is welcome. You will have a track record of forging relationships with authors, agents and internal teams, a thorough understanding of editorial and production processes and knowledge of typesetting and typography. Flexibility, meticulous organisational skills, a forensic eye for detail and the ability to manage multiple projects with flair and to deadline are essential.

We are a small team, so you will be happy to pitch in across all areas and you will have strong communication skills.

We have big plans for our children’s and YA list: we’re in an exciting phase of growth, and we’d love you to be part of that.
