 The Job Profile

Simon & Schuster UK are looking for an Assistant Editor or Editor to work in their new Gallery Kids and Gallery YA team. Reporting to the Editorial Director and supporting across the list, this is an exciting role for someone who wants to work in a varied and fast-moving environment.

Gallery Kids and Gallery YA launched in 2024 as imprints of Simon & Schuster Children’s Books, with a focus on highly commercial books from authors, illustrators, personalities and brands with a dynamic platform for launch and a compelling story.

The Job Role

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Assistant Editor/Editor has responsibility for supporting the administration and project management (including schedule tracking, title data management, writing blurbs and catalogue copy, creating deal memos), creative development and editing (including briefing covers, line-editing, proofreading, copyediting and some structural editing depending on experience) of highly commercial and high-profile fiction, non-fiction, picture books and graphic novels on the Gallery Kids and Gallery YA imprints.

Proactively working towards the shared vision of the division by bringing best-in-class quality-commercial publishing to market on time and to budget. Coordinating with the production and design departments to ensure that assigned projects are delivered within deadlines, and liaising with marketing, PR and sales teams on plans, positioning and championing talent and brands in and out of house. 

The Candidate Profile

Ideally, you will be have demonstrable experience of excelling in an editorial assistant or assistant editor role in book publishing and will be highly engaged with children’s and young adult media and popular culture, with a passion for working on the next must-have books for the broadest possible young audience.

You must be a driven team-player, with outstanding administrative and multi-tasking skills, a terrific eye for detail, creative flair, and feel comfortable liaising with various internal departments including Design, Sales, Rights, Marketing, PR and Production, as well as freelancers and talent. You will be calm under pressure and thrive within a fast-paced environment.  You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong grasp of grammar and strong proofreading skills.

Editor starting from £33,000
